Midhurst 5 Crawley 26
|
In their final league match of the season, Crawley needed to win the game to gain promotion to the A league. And win it they did, although the commanding performance they gave last week was left far behind as a strong Midhurst team made them work hard for every point. The continuity that has been a feature of Crawley's play in the last few weeks just wasn't there, and it was from messy open play that Ryan Harvey beat the defence after 7 minutes, and ran 50 metres to score the 100th try of his career. A remarkable achievement, given that this is only his third season of rugby. Alfie Spurgeon converted the try. Midhurst hit back hard, and their defence was excellent. But in the dyeing minutes of the first half Kieron Gosling drove the ball from a line-out and sucked in the defence the ball was re-cycled quickly and fed through the backs for Ben Westphal-Reed to score in the corner. Spurgeon converted magnificently from the touchline.
The second half was played in similar vein with Midhurst never letting their visitors relax. However after a period of pressure Spurgeon found space with a clearing kick from inside his 22, Jonno Salthouse
chased hard and picked up the awkward bounce. He then rounded the full-back to score under the posts for a great try. Crawley upped their game, and eventually the home side defence ran out of talent as Westphal-Reed crossed for his second try. Midhurst did score in the final seconds, but by then the game was over.
Men of Match awards went to Harvey for some outstanding defence and Ashley Eaton who had a storming match in the front row.
