9 try win keeps 1st XV high in the table
Crawley romped to a 9 try win over an enthusiastic but ultimately poor Lewes II team on Saturday to further consolidate their position high in the table. From the kick off the Lewes pack started keenly and for 5 minutes they scrapped away against the powerful Crawley pack. Manfully they won their fair share of ball while making some useful surges forward in the process. However it was not long before the Crawley pack started to rumble and before long the home team had taken complete control of the match. This triggered the try rush. Seemingly every time Crawley got into their opponents half they scored and it looked like it was going to be a complete avalanche.
In the pack prop Andy Wilson was enjoying his first start for several months while Brendan Robinson and Travers Beaton dominated the lineouts. Meanwhile in the backs, fullback Sam Basson returned any threat with credit and wingers Alistair Moffett and Guy Craddock took advantage of the space available with relish.
Lewes II to their credit did not give up, they just could not contain the pressure. The first half ended with Crawley scoring their 5 try however powerful centre Jason Burt injured himself whilst setting it up for Moffett, which brought Ben Robson onto the pitch to replace him. Robson, and centre Alex Figg, were both celebrating selection for the Sussex U20 squad. Both have come through the Crawley junior sections and it was great to see them together in the 1st team.
From the re-start Crawley took the opportunity to try a few new moves that they had been working on in training. This unsettled the home team and from a couple of clumsy mistakes Lewes pounced on the ball close to Crawley’s try line and from a couple of drives they managed to force the try. It was a nice reward for their brave pack who did not give up all game. This kick started Crawley back into life and soon Robson re-started the try scoring. Eventually the game ended with a very comfortable 59 – 5 win for the home team.
Next week Crawley face Seaford at home. Seaford are a powerful side who like to play a physical style of rugby. If Crawley want to maintain their winning run it is important that Crawley are completely up for this game.
